Part III: Continued

If you feel that your safety and security may be compromised, it’s important to do something about it. World Pulse’s Safety and Security toolkit has links to helpful resources for you to be informed and stay safe.

Self-Care as a Leader

In addition to staying safe online and offline, it is also important to take care of your mental, physical, and emotional health, so you can be the most effective leader possible. Self-care is not selfish. It is essential. In order for you to be able to work towards your vision and maintain your bold voice, you need to take care of your own personal needs.

Working for change and sharing your bold voice can be tiring, and you may experience setbacks along the way. Struggling with your work or needing to take a step back isn’t a sign of weakness. It is a normal reaction to difficult situations. By regularly practicing self-care, you can prevent getting to the point where your physical, emotional, or mental health will no longer allow you to do the work you want to do. Self-care also helps you build an awareness of how you are feeling, and when you need to take extra time or space for yourself to recharge. Remember to take care of yourself first.

We will be discussing self-care through the training, but we encourage you to access World Pulse’s Self Care Toolkit to start learning more about how to maintain your wellbeing while working for change.

Thinking Exercise:
  • How do we stay safe and secure without losing our bold voices?
  • How can you improve your own safety and security?
  • Be prepared to share your answer to these questions on our Live Call.

“Take 10” Activities

To help you think about your safety, security, and self-care, we will be incorporating “Take 10” activities into each module throughout the training. “Take 10” activities will help you check in with how you are doing each week and help you learn what you can do to take care of yourself. Each week, there will be a set of questions and one short activity for you to do. Keep the answer to these questions so you can refer back to them throughout the training and after, as you continue to work towards your vision for change.

Ask yourself:

  • How secure am I? What do I need to feel safe?
  • How well am I taking care of myself? What am I already doing to protect and care for myself?
  • What can I do to help maintain my security and reduce risks?
  • What can I do to improve how I address my needs?

After answering these questions, choose one of the ways you identified that you can improve your security or self-care to complete this week.
