2013 VOF Week 1

When I think of web 2.0 one of my favorite quotes by Dr. Seuss comes to mind—“the more you read the more things you will know. The more you learn the more places you will go”. The heart of web 2.0 is captured in this quote— especially in the latter part. Through web 2.0 a global bridge is established and women like me can go more places without having to board a flight or even pack a suitcase! Through web 2.0’s various tools and technologies such as blogs, videos, social media sites and news sites, women are able to share, learn about, and get involved in various issues that are occurring all over the world. Furthermore, web 2.0 enables women worldwide to be advocates of their rights for one another and generate awareness on common issues faced by women and girls. Today as more women begin to use and gain adequate knowledge and access to web 2.0 we are able to witness the growth and outburst of women solidarity globally.

The saying “educate a women, educate a nation” is not unfamiliar to most. A Woman who is able to acquire the skills necessary to use web 2.0 effectively, gains access to knowledge and information. This not only benefits her but her children as well—and children we all know are the future and hope of this world. It should not be forgotten that the effects of empowering women do not solely rest in the benefit of the woman herself but also her children.

Web 2.0 empowers a woman to learn, share, imagine and be creative. But most importantly it empowers a woman to use her voice to create awareness on issues and to push for change. It is important for all women to be able to access the tools and technologies provided by web 2.0 in order that we may be empowered to SPEAK UP, SPEAK OUT, and SPEAK LOUD.

Let our voices be heard.
Let our truths be seen.
