The Girl Effect

Despite only being in the midst of my second day interning at World Pulse Magazine, I am already so grateful for the vast wealth of knowledge it has given me access to. Today while researching for pertinent stories, I came upon a video posted on my Womens New Network Video feed.

After I watched one, I had to track down more...

Watching these videos made me feel impassioned, grateful and inspired. I do believe that girls are the future, and I love that I was able to see a message so aptly summed up in a minute and a half clip of invoking images. But wait....the Nike Foundation??? Certainly not a company I that would come to mind when I am listing off Human Rights Defenders. Apparently, Nike and the NoVo Foundation are "aiming to invest $100 million in unleashing the ripple effect of adolescent girls." Ok, Nike. Can we talk about the below minimum wage girl workers in subcontracted for you in Indonesia, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Pakistan and the Philippines first?

Is this a for real, or just a publicity cover up? I would really love to hear your reaction to the videos and their sponsor.

N.B. http://girleffect.org is really slow to load, I couldn't even access it. But you can read about the charity at http://www.nikefoundation.org/index.html
