I feel sad that I am a day late in submitting my week 3 assignment. I wasn't feeling well the past few days and to my dismay, my country has been hit by a huge tropical storm. There was an electricity brownout, internet connection was down, even phone lines were shut down and I did not have the means to submit my assignment on due date.

Well, if you may allow me I would still love to share with you my stories. In a democratic country like the Philippines, we enjoy freedom of expression almost to the fullest. When we do not agree with the policies of the government we are free to voice out our sentiments. We could go to the street to protest and for some angry militants they would not hesitate to burn images of government officials and even the image of the President of the Philippines. No one goes to jail for that.

Although we enjoy freedom of expression almost to the fullest but for the past years more and more journalists become victims of summary execution. They have been killed because of their harsh write ups or broadcast against prominent individuals like politicians and other influential personalities. That is why some opt to be silent of the truth.

I for one would be vigilant in my write ups. Even if I can support it with well-founded evidence I would rather keep my zipper mouth than die young. I am fully aware of the anomalies happening in my small town in Basilan. It is disheartening to know that many of my town mates do not enjoy their rights as mandated by the constitution. Some do not get their salaries on time. Their social security funds have not been remitted. I cannot blame them for that because who will fight for their rights?

But I do believe in God's time the "Truth shall set us free". Maybe I am here because God wants me to be an instrument for change. This social media will definitely help me grow and to practice to open up more. I know I can do a lot of things. All I need for now is support from people who have the same advocacies and goals like mine. Someone who will not be afraid to stand up and make a difference.

Take action! This post was submitted in response to Voices of Our Future Application: Challenges and Solutions to Creating Change.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and everyone else in the Philippines, so sorry to hear. I hope you are safe.

It's interesting how in the Philippines (and in many other supposed democracies), freedom of expression is officially allowed to the people, but with killings and intimidation, full freedom of expression cannot be said to truly exist. That is why platforms such as World Pulse are so important. All voices enjoy equal right to be heard.

Hi Sarah,

Thank you so much for writing. Yes, Thanks God I'm safe but still a lot of places are flooded and thousands are at the evacuation centers. In God's time we will bounce back from this calamity.

Yes, I agree with you that there is no such thing as limitless freedom of expression. There are restraints as provided by laws and there are still those who violate our rights. I know this forum will help a lot.

I am sorry to hear of the storm and destruction it cause. I hope you, family and friends are safe and well. Thank you for sharing your story. It is a terrible thing that such intimidation and violence is taken out on those wishing to tell the truth. You are brave to want to change such oppression and I hope you find support in the pulsewire community. -Megan

Hi Megan. Thank you for sharing your time reading my journal. Thankful that my family is safe but my heart breaks for those families on evacuation centers and those whose houses are still submerged in water. Climate change is already a big problem not only in the Philippines but in other countries as well who are experiencing the same predicaments. It is an eye-opener to all of us to take some measure and to take care our environment. These are just the consequences of abusing our mother nature.

God Bless

Hi, Sorry to hear about the flooding in your country. It is really nice of you to still find time for submitting your work even though things were not going too well. I would not worry o much about the deadline, when the circumstances are that difficult. Freedom of expression is not easily attained even in the so called advanced democratic states. It mostly comes with a huge price.

Thank you once again for sharing your story and I hope to hear more about your personal aspirations in tackling the issue of freedom of expression and safety of the people who are involved in it.

Best wishes.
