Humanitarian Action Call to Construct Toilet for Females

A large number of women and teenage girls are forced to defecate outside, exposed not only to the risks of disease and bacterial infection, but also sexual harassment and assault by men.

The widespread lack of access to toilets in the remote areas in Pakistan has an overwhelming impact on teenage young girls and women. This has been estimated that one in three women does not have access to a toilet and they are forced to find a safe place to go to the toilet in the open is undignified and risky. There are lots of reported gang rape incidences throughout country when girls and women went to nearby fields or plots around dusk to answer the call of nature.

Visualize your female family member having period without a toilet or water or a situation where females of families are forced to urinate or defecate to the field next to their house from where they are visible to others.

There is no place to hide except of small bushes and once we are out in the dark, we don’t have any clue who is watching us, who has a plan to haunt us and who is looking for an opportunity to molest us” explains Kiran, 17 years old.

The issue is very critical crisis that is contributing to disease and violence against women. According to different reports including UNICEFs’ report that almost 41 million Pakistanis don’t have access to toilets and due to this fact Pakistan has become the third largest country behind India and Indonesia where large number of population is forced to defecate in open areas.

For generations, most of the 1000 families in different areas near Bahawalpur, southern Pakistan, have lived without toilets. They've grown used to holding their bladders and bowels beings visible to men from all sides. Basti Malok Shah is one of the areas where there are almost 20 families in this village without toilet facilities.

Hence, here, I am requesting to address the issue on immediate basis. I am determining to construct Two (2) Toilets for females on initial basis in Basti Malok Shah. Total estimated cost of one toilet is almost $350 (PKR 35,000/-) including Water tank, Material and labor. Please do let me know about your contribution if you want to be the part of this humanitarian act. Your small contribution can prove that you respect and care for the dignity of female.

Regards
