Building from the ground up

For many months, I've worked within a group of grassroots volunteers to start a charter elementary school in my community. Our school's vision is to provide a foundation that encourages future innovators of our world. We believe that learning is joyful and that everyone can be successful.

Today was the opening day!

I am in awe of the accomplishments that can be made when, within a co-creative space, everyone gives their piece toward the whole. Today I am swimming in a deep well of gratitude to have been a part of this new beginning.

I was honored to be able to read a verse I wrote for our founding teachers and for all who are connected to our school at the opening ceremony. I share it now with you, and dedicate it to anyone who is building something from the ground up:

What if we all began loving some thing long before we knew what it was?

An urge, that called us into its service

That led us here,
to the opening of this one school

Where we are joined in our devotion
toward a world that is good and true.

That a child can awaken to the world within him
And develop a healthy relationship to this world in which we all live.

Brave ones,
You have answered the call
Without knowing all there is to know
But trusting that
“what may still seem remote
will come closer to your souls
as you work with the children in your classroom.”

Always remember the magnitude of what you bring each day
into the life of a child.
From your own loving being.

May you meet your courage
as you continue to build what is not completely known.

May you find support in one another,
trust the journey,
and imbue yourselves with the wonder of imagination,

May you never forget how grateful we are for you.
