WOMEN AND THE ENVIRONMENT IN THE DR CONGO

In the East of the DRC certain womens associations work to protect the environment. The Agricultural Group of Mothers for the Development of Itombwe (GAMADI) works in the large forests of Itombwe, where a large part of the forest belongs to the local community, and the other part is a nature reserve. Our group is using this occasion to share our point of view regarding the protection of nature.
1) In order to better protect the forests in the DRC, it is important to finance womens groups like ours who can educate the local community on environmental protection.
2) We ask that the state stops giving third parties the permission to exploit our environment.
3) We ask that hydroelectricity projects are undertaken in order to reduce the exploitation of embers. NB: the bad state of roads means that international conservation organisations can not access all parts of Congo to educate indigenous people and other inhabitants. Claudine BILEMO is the Co-ordinator of GAMADI.
