Effects of Web 2.0

Week One Assignment

What most excites you about web 2.0?
What excites me most about the web 2.0 is the fact that it gives me a free space to ‘hear my voice’ unopposed, on issues that I feel needs to be addressed especially gender stereotypes. It creates an avenue for networking with people of like minds across the globe from various cultural backgrounds. It also provides an avenue for me to learn from others.
What solutions you think web 2.0 brings to the global women’s empowerment movement.

Web 2.0 brings a lot of solutions to the global women’s empowerment movements. These include
1. A voice: In Africa, due to the patriarchy structure experienced in most countries, women are mostly marginalized and discriminated against. Web 2.0 (using platforms like blogs, twitter, social networking media) gives women an opportunity to make their voice heard by writing articles, report issues on discriminations, gender base violence and the prejudice experienced by them or people in their constituencies.
2. Resources: the web 2.0 provides a resource base center for all women around the world to learn and share (social networking).
3. Generally a great percentage of women cannot afford to pay a website developer to design a website for them, but by signing unto a blog (a web 2.0 tool), which is free, simple to manage and a bit similar to a normal website, women are empowered to voice their message to the public, upload articles, pictures and videos about women human rights issues via these mediums.

How is it already, or how will it be empowering for you?
I look forward to:
1. Communicate the heart cry of an average women who is faced with various forms of gender discriminations.
2. Learn how to effectively use web 2.0 for advocacy campaign in order to create a positive change in my community.
3. Learn from other women’s experiences on how web 2.0 has advance their cause of gender equality and equity via social networking.
4. Most importantly, I look forward learning how to write effectively so as to communicate the right message in my article.
