A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND IN DEED

I was so nervous on that particular Sunday. I had no appointment on that day and I was kept busy by my nephews who were allover the house. I had not heard from my mentor the last few days as she traveled to visit her lovely sister in the United Kingdom. I wondered the whole day who could have been picked for the awards.

I told myself to be strong, whatever the results, I was ready for them. Whether am picked or not I was ready. Although the interviews sounded fair, the final decision was going to come from the interviewer I comforted myself. After all its just a competition and there is no need to panic.

The time was around 5-6 pm when I received a phone call from a private number. My heart beat as I answered the call, It was actually the call I had been waiting for since Thursday. My name was called and it was Jennifer and along side her was the voice of Vera my mentor. The line was breaking but at least I was able to get the sad news that Jennifer was offering me. It was a difficult decision and I didn’t make it. Although I was ready for whatever news that was going to be offered, I couldn’t believe that I had lost out. It was like my mouth became mute and my ears deaf.

Few minutes after Jennifer hang out, I received another phone call, this time it was Vera alone.
She asked me whether I heard what Jennifer said, I told her I did. I felt like a failure, all the hard work I had put in! But with Mama Vera besides me I was comforted. She mentioned how she was proud of me and my writing. She dried my tears and made me smile again.

Since she was introduced to me as my mentor, she has been there for me, in sorrow and Joy. She has become more than my mentor, she is more like my sister and now a friend. I have burdened her with my problem and she is always there for me and never complains.
I am very grateful for her and for the world pulse team who paired me with her.

Now as I recall that moment I realize how much my mentor has been there for me, how much she has changed my world and how much she cares and loves me.

Congratulation once again to Sunnita, Jackie and Malaya and thanks for all your support Jensen, Jennifer, Janice, Scott, world pulse team, mentors and all my fellow correspondents.

And about the VOF awards, I say it’s not about winning but about rising our voices, and making the world we live in a safe and beautiful place for the marginalized especially women and children.

Below is the Verse I sent Vera because to me she is more like the woman in proverbs 31

Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. Her heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like merchants’ ships; she bringth her food from afar
She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for her households are clothed with scarlet. Strength and honor are her clothing and she shall rejoice in times to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom and her tongue is the law of kindness. Her children arise up and call her blessed
