Celebs against human trafficking

This is an excerpt from an article I wrote which appeared on Helium.com. I like to praise those who are in the public eye, yet still have the audacity to make a difference. Kudos to Demi and Ashton!

Although both Demi Moore and her husband Ashton Kutcher are opponents of human trafficking, it was Demi who took the first steps in their journey to defeat the act which she has dubbed as “modern-day slavery”. Demi Moore has been a human rights activist for almost as long as her acting career expands. Her most recent and boisterous endeavor began in 2010 when she publicly and officially became the spokesperson and main celebrity opponent of human trafficking. As part of her mission to combat human trafficking, Demi and Ashton founded

The Demi and Ashton Foundation (DNA). DNA, which was launched in January 2010, has as its mission the purpose of raising awareness about and bringing an end to human trafficking through educating the public and influencing laws.

Ten years ago, US Congress passed the Trafficking Victims Protection Act to stop human slavery. With the law came enlightenment on this exploitative crime and new mechanisms to protect its victims; however world officials must address how the campaign against this global crime must advance. As part of teaming up with the US government, as well as international organizations, Demi has coined her movement as abolitionist-oriented and aimed at targeting human trafficking in all industries. Women and children who are enslaved as domestic servants, factory workers, agricultural workers, and in other labor sectors have been reported as being treated unfairly and often employed against their will.

Since the organization kicked off its initiative last year, it has achieved numerous accomplishments. On June 26, 2011, Demi’s documentary titled Nepal's Stolen Children aired on CNN. The documentary highlights her 2010 visit with last year's CNN Hero of the Year Anuradha Koirala to discuss how she is helping women who have been forced into prostitution.

A long way from her days as Jackie Templeton on General Hospital, Demi Moore’s activism against human trafficking could very well be responsible for the participation of other nations getting involved with the creation of laws to end the atrocity. More than 130 nations have joined the United States in updating their laws to protect victims of human trafficking. The laws state that any person or organization caught participating in human trafficking is subject to prosecution and imprisonment. The audience applauds Demi Moore for her active philanthropy and role as a world community leader. Demi has proved herself as an award-winning actress and she now sets the world as her stage in the leading role of starlet humanitarian.
