Escalando Muros Digitales

Hace apenas cuatro semanas, me lancé al mundo digital. Con toda sinceridad,comparto que no anticipaba lo difícil que iba a ser. No solamente por las horas y horas escribiendo, editando, compartiendo y aprendiendo.

No anticipaba lo difícil que iba a ser algo tan sencillo: escribir lo que pienso.

Para mi, eran más barreras internas que externas. ¿Quién soy yo para opinar sobre este tema? ¿Cómo justifico mis conclusiones sin ningún experto o experta detrás de mi? ¿Qué van a pensar de mi?

Lo que estoy aprendiendo en este proceso de 'empoderamiento digital' es algo igual de sencillo. Yo soy la persona que mejor puede escribir sobre mi propia vida, mis propias experiencias y cómo veo el mundo. Yo soy la primera que tiene que creer que mi punto de vista es válido y que el mensaje que quiero transmitir es importante.

Pero no estoy escribiendo en mi diario privado. Estoy publicando en ́El Internet ́. Y ahí cambia la cosa. Para mí 'El Internet' es un espejo deformado de la vida real.

Es un espacio elitista, privilegiado, que excluye a la mayoría de la población.

Es un espacio que exacerba la división Norte/Sur. ¿En qué países se están creando la mayoría de los contenidos? ¿En qué idiomas?

Es un espacio donde participan más hombres que mujeres. Y no sólo eso, la discriminación estructural por razones de género se traslada al Internet. Muchísimos temas no se discuten, o se discuten con perspectivas muy limitadas. Y siguen los roles tradicionales. Las mujeres con sus blogs sobre comida, moda, la familia, como cuidar el cutis y prevenir las arrugas, ya saben 'temas femeninos'.

Pero existen otras facetas del espejo. 'El Internet' también...

Es un espacio que no tiene fin. ¿Se imaginan cuantas páginas web nuevas se lanzan todos los días?

Es un espacio que tiene poder para incitar movimientos, revoluciones. Aunque critiquemos, y con buena razón, el alcance del ciberactivismo. Una injusticia al otro lado del mundo se puede volver viral en horas.

Es un espacio con millones de voces, que van creciendo y multiplicándose todos los días. Voces diversas, que no han sido representadas en medios tradicionales.

Yo quiero que mi voz sea una de esas.

Las mujeres, en toda nuestra diversidad, tenemos que aprender a dominar las herramientas digitales y apropiarnos de este espacio digital. Por que nosotras, sí podemos revertir este espejo deformado, para convertirlo en un espacio más diverso, incluyente, y transmitir nuestros voces... a todos los rincones del Internet.

Escalating Digital Barriers

Only four weeks ago, I entered the digital world. With all honesty, I share with you that I did not expect how difficult it would be. Not only for the hours and hours writing, editing, sharing and learning.

I did not expect that something so simple would be so difficult: to write what I think.

For me, it was more internal tan external barriers. Who am I to give an opinion on a topic? How do I justify my conclusions without an expert behind me? What are they going to think about me?

What I am learning in this process of “digital empowerment” is something just as simple. I am the person that can best write about my own life, my own experiences and how I see the world. I am the first person that has to believe that my point of view is valid and that the message that I want to transmit is important.

But I am not writing in my private diary. I am publishing in “The Internet”. And that is where things change. For me “The Internet” is a deformed mirror of the real life.

It is an elitist space, privileged, that excludes the majority of the population.

It is a space that exacerbates the North/South division. In which countries is most of the content being created? ¿In which languages?

It is a space where more men participate than women. And not only that, the structural discrimination for gender reasons is translated to the Internet. A lot of topics are not discussed, or they are discussed with limited perspectives. And the traditional roles continue. The women with blogs related to food, fashion, family, how to take care of your skin and prevent wrinkles, you know “feminine topics”.

But there are other sides of the mirror. “The Internet” also...

It is a space that has no end. Can you imagine how many new webpages are created every day?
It is a space that has power to start movements, revolutions. Even though we criticize, and with good reason, the cyber activism’s reach. An injustice at the other side of the world can become viral in hours.
It is a space with millions of voices, which are growing and multiplying every day. Diverse voices, which have not been represented in traditional means.

I want my voice to be one of those.

Women, in all of our diversity, have to learn to master the digital tools and own this digital space. Because we can reverse this deformed mirror, to make it into a more diverse, inclusive space and transmit our voices… to all the corners of the Internet.
