IT IS SO SAD THAT SOME RELATIONSHIPS THAT START OUT WITH SO MUCH PROMISE END UP AS BEING THE WORST EXPERIENCE FOR ONE OF THE PARTNERS. OPRAH PUT IT SUCCINTLY RECENTLY WHEN SHE SAID LOVE DOESNT HURT (OR SHOULD I SAY SHOULDNT HURT). SHE MADE THAT STATEMENT IN ONE OF HER SHOWS THAT WAS FOCUSING ON THE CHRIS BROWN/RIHANNA MESS. WHO WOULD HAVE IMAGINED THAT A WOMAN AS SUCCESFUL AS RIHANNA WOULD END UP AS A PUNCHING BAG FOR A MAN THAT CLAIMS TO LOVE HER? THE SAD TRUTH IS, WOMAN WHO GO THROUGH THAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE ARE GETTING TO BE IN THE MAJORITY OR SHOULD I SAY INCREASING IN NUMBER. IN A 2008 NIGERIA DEMOGRAPHIC HEALTH SURVEY REPORT, IT WAS STATED THAT 28 PERCENT OF WOMEN REPORTED EXPERIENCING VIOLENCE FROM THE AGE OF 15. WOMEN WHO GO THROUGH THESE KINDS OF EXPERIENCES ARE RELUCTANT TO TELL ANYONE BECAUSE IN MOST CASES, THE WOMEN IS TOLD TO BEAR IT.SHE IS TOLD THAT SHE HAS TO TOLERATE THE SICKNESS TO SAVE HER MARRIAGE OR SHE IS MADE TO FEEL THAT SHE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR IT ALL. PLEASE WHOEVER YOU ARE FROM WHTAEVER COUNTRY YOU COME FROM DONT TOLERATE PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL ABUSE FROM SOMEONE WHO CLAIMS TO LOVE YOU. I WAS IN WHAT I CAN DESCRIBE AS A WONDERFUL RELATIONSHIP FOR CLOSE TO FOUR YEARS BUT JUST AT THE POINT OF BREAKING UP, HE REVEALED AN UGLY SIDE OF HIM THAT I NEVER KNEW EXISTED. I LEFT WITH REGRET . I LEFT WITH SOME NOSTALGIA FOR ALL THE GOOD TIMES WE SHARED BUT I STILL LEFT. I WAS THE LUCKY ONE. MANY WOMEN ARE NOT THAT LUCKY. IT DOESNT MATTER IF IT IS JUST A SLAP OR A SHOVE, IT STARTS FROM SOMEWHERE. DONT TOLERATE INDIGNITY ON YOUR PERSON. YOU DESERVE MORE

Hi Efe,

Thank you for writing on this important topic, especially during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. Your strength and courage comes through in your writing and while I am sorry to hear of your relationship ending in abuse, I am encouraged by your power to leave. This can be the hardest thing to do... but also the most important move you can make in your life. You're right - we all deserve more. Love to read your journals efe. Keep writing!

Love, Jade

I am happy to be a part of this. I must commend WORLDPULSE for encouraging women to speak out. Speaking out will help heal the wounds

Efe,

You are incredible! Thank you for this empowering entry. Any abuse, physical or emotional, disrespects and diminishes the one who suffers it. Your voice crying out against such violence helps those affected feel truly loved and whole again. As you say, 'Speaking out will help heal the wounds." On behalf of all women, Thank you.

Warm regards,

Emily
