In our province, we use the earth in different ways:

-Agriculture

-The addition and channeling of drinking water

-The building of houses thanks to plots

With regards to agriculture, we cultivate the land to produce a large amount of food, because much of what we consume comes from what we grow in our villages. So, the villages supply the city with an abundance of food, such as:

Cassava, sweet potato, potatoes, tomatoes, soy, beans, peanuts, cauliflower, carrots, spinach and many other vegetables…

But what worries us even more [to not have access to this opportunity?] is that our villages are very unsafe. The villagers can no longer work in the field like they should out of fear than the crooks (soldiers) who take over the villages will kill them. Women, particularly, are victims of sexual violence. Women, young women and little girls are all victims because, in most family, it is often the women who work in the fields. The city no longer receives as much food as before, and even the villages no longer consume as much as they used to.

Because these crooks (soldiers) invade our villages, most of the population is forced to take shelter in the city, especially women and girls who are the victims of sexual violence. They are mercilessly raped by insertion of various objects into their vaginas. This truly breaks our hearts and we take great pity on these women. These circumstances call for urgent assistance. Even if there are people that work in these villages, there are many villages that are very far away from the city. Those who work in this domain are no longer interested in working [due to the circumstances], so we must offer immediate help. This is also causing a rural exodus and a noticeable decrease in food production.

Dear Feza Rosemarie,

You are raising such an important topic here. It is horrible to hear of the violence these communities are facing, and especially that women are being targeted. The connection between this violence and food production is an important one. By disrupting the food system the violence is amplified. The immediate devastation is to the farming families, who either suffer the violent attacks themselves or who lose their livelihood because they cannot return to their fields. But then there is a second catastrophe as the food system is disrupted and the people in surrounding areas don't have enough to eat.

I am sorry to hear about this, and grateful that you are speaking out! This is a problem that deserves attention and must be stopped. I hope you will keep sharing and drawing attention to the issues faced in your region.

Best wishes, Sarah

Bonjour Feza Rosemarie,

Pilar
