Giving versus Teaching

In an effort to add to the discussion on giving money to those in need as a journalist, I believe it is down to personal choice. However, perhaps I bring a view that has not been expressed to date.

I have been in circumstances where I have represented international organisations on missions, particularly during elections. I am almost always placed in rural areas where there is a higher level of poverty and it is extremely difficult when it is children that approach me. These can be the most frustrated missions because all eyes are on me because of the jacket I wear. I sometimes wonder if it is the same as journalists. I would love to hear the experience of a journalist that represents international media companies like Reuters etc.

These situations can be sometimes very sensitive. Do I give someone change or food and risk someone thinking that I am paying someone off for something? Or do I just hand over the change as it may help that persons out for the next few hours.

This brings me to the discussion of giving persons a fish versus teaching them to fish. I am one who prefers to help where I can but prefer to guide the person towards an organisation on agency that can assist them with something long term and can help them get on their feet and be independent.

It is not out of selfishness but, in my view, I could not give the person something and then walk off knowing that they will have to engage in that cycle again in another few hours.
