Job Search in the '00s

Our guest tonight, Alise Cortez of Improved Experience, made some excellent points about managing expectations during the job search process.



Keep the expectation that the entire process will take at least two months, maybe three or more. The gargantuan task of lining up everyone's schedules and juggling multiple priorities is not simple or quick.



Ditch the expectation of a return phone call or even a rejection letter. In the attempt to use technology to increase efficiency, the "human touch" has sometimes been lost altogether. It's unfortunate, but it's reality.



Existing somewhere in the middle is basic courtesy. Most likely, it just won't happen in today's hiring process, which is not like normal human interaction. Like moving to a different city, it can be an entirely different world. Of course, you may just receive a call back. It's refreshing when it happens, isn't it?



Here are some stats that will probably make you say Amen:



82% of job seekers simply want to be told what's next in the process.



91% just want to know if they're moving forward!



53% would think higher of the employer if their opinion was requested.



Above all, please realize that you are not the only one out there. Believe it or not, companies want to hire great talent! You may view the job search as inhuman, cold and difficult to navigate. But keep going until you get the job you want, and don't take anything personally.
