"VOF WEEK 2 (THE THE PLIGHT OF WOMEN IN NORTHERN KENYA)"

Northern kenya is an area inhabited by the pastoralist communities. The area has harsh climatic conditions. most people in this area live on herding animals. This is my home area. this is where i was born .Thia area presents a society where the life of a woman is so difficult since birth. from the time the girl is born to the time she dies, there are a number of issues that make her life very difficult.
my story begins by exposing all the challenges and dificulties that a woman or rather a girl goes through in northern kenya.
when a girl is born in a typical traditional pastoralist family, the community welcomes this in two ways, whereas the father is happy that he will get bride's prize when the girl gets out of age, the community appreciates how it will misuse the girl child by making her to be like the beast of burden in the society.
women in particular in the pastoralist society are denied so many things. First its the right of the women to speak for herself in terms of expression her views. women are not allowed to speak in a public functions among the pastoralist communities, it is claimed to be a taboo. Secondly women are the ones who do all the odd jobs in the home that includes but not limited to cooking, fetching water, looking after the baby and finally taking care of her husband
the roles of a woman extends even to serving the wider society yet her role is never recognised by the society.
when it comes to marriage, women are paid off in the name of the bride's prize. Her rights in marriage are infringed. In case of divorce she is the one who suffers most. In terms of owning property, the womn's rights are furtherly violated.
The pastoralist women are rendered voiceless . They are abused and even cained at times by their husbands yet they contribute so much to the development of the society. women in northern kenya are not given their rightful place in the society they live in. They are not given even an opportunity to lead yet they exhibit a very big and wonderful potentiial of being good leaders to the society.

This is my story. I want to stand up and speak for the voiceless women in my home in northern kenya so that women in kenya and the rest of the world can be heard, respected and listended to. women are the society's future. They are the girls. the sisters, the mothers and even the grandmothers, very important people for this planet.
my commitment as an applicant of our future voices is to see women in every part of the world empowered with information so that they can stand as strong pillrs of unity and development of the entire society. It is my believe that i will get the necessary skills and networks so that i can beable to champion for the common woman not only in my home area but across the globe. i will be happy to share ideas with other women how we can help change the world through our voices.
