It was a sunny Monday morning when I left Manila. I felt happy and blessed for another opportunity to see the children in the community. The day before, I had prayed that God would find me a place to stay where I would meet the children.
Once I arrived, I met the staff of Himaya 2 Project and the area leaders. In Ozamis City we traveled for an hour or two. Most children participate bible studies and able to show their talents through singing, memory verse and attentive.
Next day, we visited Macalibre, our furthest destination. I met a 9-year-old boy there. He was a cheerful, active, and talented boy. He had fallen from a tree while playing with other kids. As a result, he had difficulty bending. I had a touching conversation with the boy. He recounted happy and sad times before telling me what changed his life after the accident. As he continued I asked him to sing the song “This is the Day”. I saw tears in his eyes as he sang and asked him why. He replied, “Iniisip ko ang sakit ko.” (I think about my illness). I held his arm and asked him to close his eyes while we prayed. He cannot play like other kids because of his injury. He suffers from pain and sadness. Still, he hopes to be cured so he can return to school and play like a normal kid.
The project staff has many responsibilities in the monitoring of sponsored children. They talk directly to the kids and their parents. I have heard the stories and experiences and pray that the children and their families are prioritized and given the care they deserve.
They say we must treasure every moment here on earth. My community visit in Himaya 2 Project brought me closer to the heart of the children. Every day at work, I am reminded that there are thousands of children who dream of a better life. I thank the Lord for the opportunity to serve HIM through this ministry. I also thank the children who have inspired us to continue a ministry of hope.
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6)
