Venciendo distancias

Hace 25 años junto a mi esposo decidimos empezar nuestro proyecto de vida en un lugar de la Cordillera Patagónica. No sabíamos que uno de los grandes problemas de esta región es el aislamiento y principalmente la falta de escuelas. Trabajo como docente, lo que incluye el trabajo en el aula y también la visita a los pobladores rurales.
Mi primer acercamiento a una computadora no fue muy complicado, porque tenía experiencia en mecanografía. Luego surgió el correo electrónico, que en principio lo utilicé para comunicarme con mi familia y mis amigos. Luego comencé a trabajar un programa de medio ambiente internacional, el cual debía registrar una serie de datos en la web, este trabajo lo fui desarrollando con mis alumnos. A lo largo de los años aprendí a usar muchas herramientas para poder mejor la calidad de mis clases. Pero hubo un hecho que me hizo ver el poder que podía tener el uso de INTERNET en lugares aislados como en el que yo vivo. Por aquellos años fui invitada a dar un taller a otros docentes, pertenecían a escuelas de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, sobre la implementación de este programa de medio ambiente internacional. Al final de mi explicación, me preguntaron cómo podían hacer para acceder a la información que yo les estaba mencionando, a lo que respondí que lo que debían hacer era conectarse y entrar en la WEB, que si yo lo hacía desde una escuela de la cordillera Patagónica, ellos podían hacerlo con más facilidad por estar en una gran ciudad. Siempre recuerdo esta experiencia, y pienso como las herramientas tecnológicas nos permiten vencer la distancia y aislamiento, si queremos y ponemos voluntad en utilizarlas.
INTERNET y las herrmientas en linea me han permitido completar mis estudios en producción agropecuaria a distancia y actualmente estoy realizando mi carrera universitaria de grado online.
En estos momentos, utilizo aulas virtuales para dictar los cursos a mis alumnos, y estoy programando la implementación del nivel medio en modalidad online para los adultos del área rural que deseen continuar sus estudios. Este grupo de adultos en su mayoría son mujeres a cargo de los hogares a quienes se les dificulta, por la lejanía, concurrir a una escuela.

Conquering distances

Twenty five years ago I decided with my husband to start our life project in a Patagonia mountain range location. We did not know that one of the greatest problems of this region is the isolation and mainly the lack of schools. I work as a teacher, which includes work in the classroom and also visits to the rural inhabitants.

My first encounter to a computer was not too complicated, because I had experience in typewriting. Then, the email appeared, which in the beginning I used it to communicate with my family and my friends. Then, I started working in an international environmental program, which had to log a series of data into the web; I started developing this task with my students. Through the years I learned to use many tools to improve the quality of my classes. But an incident occurred that made me realize the power of the INTERNET usage in isolated locations as they one I live in. In those years I was invited to give a workshop to other teachers, they belonged to schools in the city of Buenos Aires, about the implementation of this international environmental program. At the end of my explanation, they asked me how they could access the information that I was talking about, to which I responded that what they had to do was to get online and get into the WEB, that if I do it from a school in the Patagonia mountain range, that they could do it easier for been in a big city. I always remember this incident, and I think how the electronic tools allow us to conquer distance and isolation, if we want and are willing to use them.

INTERNET and the online tools have allowed me to finish my studies in farming production virtually and currently I am working on my university degree online.

In this moment, I use virtual classrooms to teach classes to my students, and I am programming the implementation of the middle level in an online form for adults of the rural area that would like to continue their education. This group of adults in the majority, women are in charge of their homes to which it is difficult, due to the distance, to attend a school.
