This morning, around 11:30, teachers participated in a march demanding an increase in pay. Classrooms are all closed for the day, children are staying in their homes. Education is a crucial point for everyone, no matter what their race, and so the protesters made their way to the government building to express their rights. Education is the foundation for growth in one’s life, a growth without obstacles, moving from one career to the next. A country’s development is built on education. Without education, there is no development, no communication (or it would certainly be difficult). If teachers are not motivated, their communication with the children will be lacking, they will begin to ask students for money in return for allowing them to pass to the next grade. In fact, the students will never forget this corruption. This is a major problem for today’s youth, because they are the leaders of tomorrow. Education begins in the home and ends with the teacher. If only parents kept up to date with their children’s progress through their homework. Many parents abandon their responsibilities due to unemployment. The government must pay attention to these teachers and their demands and offer a long-term solution so that the teaching environment may be a healthy one where teachers do not bribe students for a passing grade. Let us bring a stop to this corruption! May the corruption be punished. Let it be required that the teachers and the students who are caught in these traps answer under the law. The police service was present to ensure the safety of the protesters on their way to the government building.

Hello Mauwa Brigitte,

Thank you for sharing the news of this teacher's march in Bukavu. We have similar stories happening here in the U.S. Teaching is one of the most important professions, but so often teachers are underpaid and underappreciated! Education is the key to progress, and teachers are the keepers of that key. Thank you for sharing this story!

-Sarah

Sarah,
