The economy in the rural world I was born in Goma in the province of North Kivu in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Goma is a town in conflict due to cross-border and ethnic issues, among others. The native population does farming and this is a main source of income in rural areas. For my dissertation at the University of Goma, I did a study on the banana cultivation system and the behaviours of farmers in Minova between 2000 and 2013. Following the study and data analysis, I noted, first of all, that women’s rights were ridiculed and, second, farmers were not trained in land management, one of several important factors of production in these areas. As it is, the population suffers from food insecurity due to a lack of food products on the market and a lack of income enabling them to access such products. The main victims are women and children. I hope that, one day, rural areas will be freed from the yoke of ignorance and will be able to look towards economic growth and sustainable development. And this can only happen if together we throw ourselves into this battle.

Ruth
