I am the President of the urban community market in Bagira. In our market, mums clean twice a week, sweeping, unblocking the gutter, hoeing around the warehouses...Our city does not provide any public dump, so our Committee members have to manage waste disposal on their own. For example, they build partnerships with NGOs dealing with this issue, such as the Red Cross who once had the courage to step in. We sometimes negotiate with peasants so that they can take care of our waste during the dry season. We need a transportation system, but the city department in charge with environmental matters is not interested in getting the city clean. You can find waste all along the roads and the pirat markets. Goods are lying around everywhere without any monitoring. Nobody takes care of this, and women sacrifice themselves. Some even clean in front of the city hall while authorities pass by and ignore them. Our market consists of 80% women.
