PROFILE

"I would give justice to those who have been suppressed, exploited and discriminated, would educate people and make easy access of cloths, shelter, food and employment for the people and would build a community where people would equally respect both gender socially and politically" she replied when I questioned her- "what would be the first 3 priorities if you would be given power to change the world?"

Srijana Karki, 36, Single, is one amongst the 6 of her siblings. Single is not the word that people use in her community, they say she is unmarried and show pity to her. However, she is proud for her achievement and for the work she has done till now. Her work has given her the recognition in all the 75 districts in Nepal and she even got the chance to visit Bangladesh through one of the organization Oxfam which choosed Srijana for raising voice for woman rights to represent Nepal for woman conference there. It was a great chance for her to raise the woman issues and she learned the woman violence issues in Bangladesh and other countries. When People give priority to her while they come for woman issue related visit to Dolakha, it makes her feel respected and honored.

She was 18 years old when she joined school and she could only study up to school leaving certificate level (class 10), due to the pressure to leave school from home only because she was a girl. But feels happy too because she at least could study to that level when it was hard to find out the school age girls of her village in school. School was tough for her – as getting enrollment to the school was itself late and the attending school after doing the household work was the big difficulty.

With the great sigh she tells about her inspiration which came out of a terrible incident that she had seen when she was in class 6. The memory is still fresh in her mind and her voice started trembling when she was telling me the story-"there was a woman in our village whose husband has gone abroad for work. And at that time woman were prohibited to plough in land with the hoe, so she asked her neighbor man for help. But people blamed her of being unfaithful to her husband and being involved in bad relation with that man even though she was innocent. And one day all the village people gathered and they pull out all the clothes of her without leaving any small clothes to cover any parts of her body and they did hit like anything." Srijana, was full of tears, helpless at that time but she decided right that moment that she will one day fight for the justice and fight against the discrimination. And that was one terrible incident which became the reason to work for woman rights and work against woman violence.

It has been almost 10 years that she is working against woman violence, rights and for other woman issues and currently she is involved with the Woman Human Rights District Network in Dolakha(a district in Nepal). Through these years she even faced threaten by some people who blamed her as a feminist who destroys the family relation but she never took those things as barrier to her work, she did fight with the obstacles and she is proud for speaking in support of sufferer.

She believes that being able to speak in support of woman and being able to work for woman is the first success of her life because without being self capable it is almost impossible to help others. Awareness can’t be measured in quantity but she has helped many though it’s hard to tell the number of people she helped but she tells with the pride-"few months ago a woman from neighbor village came to me and thanked me for opening her eyes with the knowledge of woman rights and building confidence to speak against violence and injustice and at that moment I felt the great happiness inside me", I could feel the happiness in her face when she was telling me the story and she again tells me-"This is what keeps on making me inspired to work and more work for woman"

Except some, people appreciate, support and encourage her for her work. Her work has built the confidence in her and it has made her more thoughtful and honest towards her work-it is the strongest point being a woman involved in an organization, but sometimes she feels discouraged because some people judge her by gender and her marital status and tell that one who is herself unmarried has no rights to speak for woman (married/ unmarried) and she is blamed some time that she can’t understand other’s family issues. With the great respect to womanhood she replies them with her great answer-"though I am unmarried, though I am not a mother of any child, I have that mother’s love in my heart and I have the same womanhood as others woman who are married or mother." She accepts the fact that one cannot make all the people happy at once and she take it as her challenge and she never stops fighting in spite of all the obstacles.

Though there are economic, social, cultural and political barriers, she aims to raise the voice on woman issues and wants to start a revolution against woman violence but at the same time she want it to be non – violent one as she believes one violence cannot stops other violence.

In her leisure time she likes to read the books on woman rights and woman issues so that she can learn more and can work effectively.
