The Philippines and Reproductive Health

The Philippines is a country of contradictions.
It is highly westernized and yet stuck in an old rot of poverty and old traditions.
It is one of the countries that has liberal attitude towards women and her pursuit for professional advancement. Men here have no qualms about women succeeding in corporate settings.
And yet the government have long refused to protect the basic right of women on reproductive health.

Reproductive Health bills promoting government-led education on birth control have been repeatedly dashed in Congress, no thanks to the influence of cassock-wearing single men. Because of this more and more women and even girls are resorting to dangerous solutions such as abortions which most of the time results to death and other serious injuries.

I know an overwhelming majority of the average Filipinos agree that the RH bill should be passed, however selfish people will continue to block this. I look forward to the day when we will all reunite and finally tell them and the world that the Philippines is not a country that forsakes the rights of its female population.

With enough pressure from the global community, this wall of ignorance will be struck down. And that will be a victorious day, indeed.
