Our Strength to Calm the Storms in Our Lives

A call wakes me up very early one day. It was Lolei a young women in her early thirties. She called to say she was coming to visit me. Indeed, before noon she arrived. It was very exciting to see her and that she was well. I gave her all my attention for I knew she had a purpose for visiting.

Lolei had a chance of getting basic education that enables her read and write. She manages to send me messages through her phone when need arises. She also communicates with her son when he is away from home. This keeps her in touch with other people.

During our discussion she explained to me that she was away from her home for some days to attend to her medical clinics where she goes for chemotherapy. Lolei has had an early diagnosis of cervical cancer. Her life has not been easy. She many times had to rely on her first born son who dropped out of secondary school in her favor to sell traditional artifacts and herbs to locals and tourists to raise money for her treatment and traveling expenses.

She also narrated how she got support from her sister -in –law a nominated counselor who accompanies / guides her every time she attended her clinics.

On this day of our discussion, she explained to me that the medical results were very good. The doctor told her not to worry anymore because her problem had cleared. Then I, clearly understood why she was excited and kept her smile glowing on, all through. “I thank God for healing me, she said”.

I saw how lucky she was that her problem had been identified, received an early treatment and was once again a happy woman unlike hundreds of thousands of women in similar situations.

Today, as a World Pulse Change Maker, I see the importance of celebrating women helping others in need, celebrating lives of those in various problems and encouraging them not to ever give up their lives but to forge on. I know it is not easy either with all costs involved but sharing with others what one is going through can yield very positive results. One can get help through sharing.

Although illiteracy rates among many women in Tanzania are still high, many uneducated women are able to use their cell phones to communicate. They can easily call to share their problems , interests and happiness.

I celebrate all women in Tanzania and across the globe and urge them to be each others’ keepers. To help and continue supporting those in any situation- war tone areas, refugees, immigrants, imprisoned fighters of human rights, living with disabilities and many others including those standing out to protect their lands .

Today, with the use of digital technology, hundreds of girls, women and learning Institutions in Tanzania are connecting with my organization to help train their girls on life skills for purpose of personal and educational development.

How to Get Involved
