Checking in with the Editorial Midwives

Dear Editorial Midwives,

The stories from my correspondents are compelling and heart warming. I'm delighted to have this window open upon another world––actually, upon many other worlds. The women are strong and spirited. They seem so appreciative of WorldPulse and all the volunteers who give them hope.

I'm dying to know how other Editorial Midwives are doing? What successes have you had? What challenges?

For me, the success comes in hearing from \"my\" correspondents and reading how they have changed because of the \"gifts from life\" (to quote one of my correspondents and meaning \"difficult circumstances\") that each has experienced. The stories are remarkably similar in this respect. What's wonderful is how each one learns from their hardships and becomes a better person with a vision for a better world. I was delighted to see their photos and quotes in the recent issue of WorldPulse.

The challenges as Editorial Midwife are several. Coming into this work part way through an assignment was tricky: learning the website, learning the course materials, striking a balance between my role as \"friend\" and \"midwife,\" being compassionate and objective at the same time, finding the nut graph in each story, having enough time to read and comment on each draft, fighting my own perfectionistic editing tendencies in favor of a larger perspective.

I hope others will weigh in so we can share and learn from each other.
