Brother, this RakshaBandhan, I will protect you

This #RakshaBandhan, I once again challenge and address this patriarchal Indian custom and redefine it for myself and for my daughter so that it empowers us.

Traditionally #RakshaBandhan signifies that girls and women are the weaker sex and they need protection by their brothers. 'Raksha' means protection and 'Bandhan' means bond. On the occasion of this Hindu festival, sisters tie a sacred thread on their brother's wrist, pray for their prosperity and in return the brothers vow to protect their sisters throughout their lives.

As a gender equality activist and founder of my organization Sayfty, I believe in equal protection and equal rights for women and girls. I am calling out this regressive custom by promising my brothers protection and care whenever they need it.

How to Get Involved

Challenge a tradition that no longer serves you as a girl or a woman. Redefine it for yourself and for your family. Start a new tradition that empowers you and makes you a better role model for others.
