Collecting Dust

collecting dust

my sister's ashes

sit in the back of the closet

in the back of a shelf

in the back of my mother's house..

.

besides them

is another

plain brown paper wrapped box

my great aunt's

next to my sister

on the shelf

in the closet

in my mother's house

.

and sometimes,

sometimes i imagine myself small

sitting daintily,

almost precariously between the two boxes

my legs dangling over the edge

of the shelf

talking to the boxes

who listen

silently, respectfully

safe and unassuming in their brown paper dresses...

and let them know:

.

i am coming

wait for me

don't leave me behind

for i would join you too

one day

i would

to be wrapped in brown paper

sedate and humbled

placed carefully and quietly

on that shelf

between sister and aunt...

.

taking my place

letting my ashes, too,

collect dust.
