Call Me Okaasan: Adventures in Multicultural Mothering

I'm a voracious reader (currently reading Links by Somalian writer Nuruddin Farah) and also a writer and editor. My first novel, published in the United States last year, is called Losing Kei, and is about an expat mother in Japan who loses custody of her only son to her Japanese ex and does whatever she can to get him back. (In Japan there is no such thing as joint custody).

My next book is an anthology of essays by mothers around the world on raising children across two or more cultures. The writers include a Malaysian expatriate in America, a Candian mom in South Africa, a Chinese mom in America, a British mom in Krygyzstan, an Austrian/American mom in France, and an American mom in Turkey. Some topics addressed include bilingualism, skin color, food, and culture. This book will be published in May, 2009, by Wyatt Mackenzie Publishing.
