Poetry Speaks Truth

I am in two poetry groups in my area here near Chicago, USA. I feel so lucky to have these friends and associations with writers. I like short poems best. That is because I think it is the nature of the poem to be concise, and to say some strong truths in a few words. This is quite effective to the reader. The contemporary \"free verse\" is the ideal form, since it allows total freedom of form, and the writer can express her ideas in simple, personal ways.

If you write poetry, try to find a poetry group, and one which has \"readings\" in the community. Let your poems and message be heard. It is important to share them. Or mail them to friends, or to organizations whose mission is the same as yours. Another way to share (because it is hard to get published!) is to print/type/write your poems in a little paper book, or on sheets of paper, and roll them up and tie with a ribbon, and give to friends and aquaintances as little gifts. Or sell them to raise money for your group or cause.

I have written several poems about the crisis in Haiti; also of various oppressive events around the world. To get your thoughts and feelings down on paper is the first step to your taking action! Spell out what you are thinking!

Poetry is non-violent, even if using violent words; it is gentle, quick to read, worth study later by rereading. It can have a strong impact on your community. A poem can be a message of support, encouragement, love. It is a powerful art.
