Will War Finally Cease?

I long ago gave up on being a member of the culture from which I came;
In order to be included, I had to play by rules of their exclusive games.
I like the security of rules when they are justly and equally applied;
That this wasn't the way of their world, I couldn't, even as a child, deny.

The great message that I believe is the enlightened human's privilege,
Is that, unlike other animals, we can choose with what group we live.
The tragedy is that, unlike other animals who hold each other to rules,
We humans, by our emotional attachments, make of each other, fools.

Animals in the wild have the sense to cut off those harming the community.
What is it about community preservation that we humans fail to see?
We have elevated the mere fact that we have human skin in common
To the point where those who are still only animals are threatening to win.

We seem to have confused power-seeking with true passion.
Humanity cannot survive without carefully taught compassion.
We have so perverted the idea of the sacred, love, and divinity
That we have destroyed the essence of human community.

We continue to make excuses for our adherence to tradition,
Instead of redefining humanity's most sacred mission.
We have control, as a collective force to create a path of peace.
If we can impart the joy of variety, will war with each other finally cease?
