Safe Internet Cafe for Afghan Women

Young Women for Change, founded in April 2011, is an independent non-profit organization consisting of tens of volunteer women and male advocates across Afghanistan who are committed to empowering Afghan women and improving their lives through social and economical participation, political empowerment, awareness and advocacy.

One of the main needs of every individual in globalized world is internet. Especially in areas where the media is dominated by men, internet is key to raising women's knowledge about the world we live in. It helps women and men around the world connect, learn about each other and becoming more empowered. It raises awareness about current issues and it can inspire movements and activism.

Even now, unfortunately, one of the main problems for the Afghan women is using these services for their means without harassment and obstacles. For decades now, women in Afghanistan have been harassed, abused and degraded in public. They fear for their safety when they go out; they are publicly insulted, groped and otherwise verbally assaulted. Going to public spaces, like shops, schools, governmental offices, internet cafes, etc, is a very hard task. If they go to an Internet café, they are harassed, stared at and some times harassment gets to a physical level where men in these places will grope and touch them. This will further discourages women from going to Internet café’s and use them and deprive women of information and knowledge as well as the opportunity to network with women around the world.

Young Women for Change wants to create a women-only, harassment-free Internet Café in Kabul to connect more women to the world in a safe and comfortable space!
