Introducing myself and my journal: Across an Ocean

About Me:
My name is Deb Knowles and I am a Teacher for the Montgomery County School District in Troy, North Carolina. I am very excited to be a part of the World Pulse program. I came into teaching three years ago as a second career teacher from New York who had a distorted vision of the teacher/student exchange that would take place in my classroom. My dream of relaying information to a student body that is eager to learn and grow into productive citizens was met full force with the reality that many of my students were living in poverty and education may not have been their first priority.
This year I selected a few 7th grade African American girls to help me sponsor a girl and follow her academic progress. It is my hope that our little group will grow into a chapter that encourages and supports the importance for girls to get an education, stay in school, and break the cycle of poverty.

My Passions:
Keeping kids in school

My Challenges:
Poverty

My Vision for the Future:
100 percent graduating class

My Areas of Expertise:
Teacher, artist
