A whole wide world of possibilities

What excites me about Web 2.0 is that communication has been liberated. In the past, the media controlled information now; it is just a click away.
Web 2.0 is a powerful educational tool, I can learn about other people’s cultures and they can learn from mine. I can venture into distant lands and places, converse with others in real time just as if they were my neighbours. Time and space is no longer a barrier.
With Web 2.0, marginalized communities that experience a shortage of quality schools, teachers and reading material, can now tap into the internet and upgrade to a new level, so in this respect, Web 2.0 also promotes development.
The global women’s empowerment movement can now be more effective as Web 2.0 is able to bring women around the world to a common ‘round table’ where open discussions can take place. In the past, women in rural areas were often represented by others in international conferences. It was difficult to verify if information was relayed back to the grassroots and utilised by those it was intended for. Now with Web 2.0, the woman in the rural area can communicate directly with others, form relevant networks and alliances with those who can impact her directly.
Secondly, women can also learn from experiences of others as to what works and what does not, they can plug into the latest innovations and also make contributions. The possibilities are endless as women can use Web 2.0 for research, marketing and sales. Web 2.0 can also be used to lobby governments to approve bills that promote women empowerment.
With Web 2.0, women have a voice and it is up to them to glean from this powerful resource available at their doorstep.
I as a woman, I find the above examples relevant in my life as well. I am no longer limited by space and time; I am free to express my views, thoughts and observations and also learn from others. I can form groups with like-minded individuals and hold conversations with others on a regional, national and global platform.
