This land is my land, this land is your land...

The night has fallen, I am sitting in my home, upon my couch, in my comfortable clothes and I ponder the question "What does Land mean to me?".
Is it the dirt that is under my house, and that lays under my grass? Is it the loam I plant my garden in every year? How about the Earth I walk my feet upon everyday?
I suppose Land could mean all that, however I feel it is so much more. It is far away, unknown places that I haven't seen, or walked upon. Places I have only heard stories about. I have always wanted to travel to new lands. I want to see the green of Ireland, the red of the Grand Canyon, the ice in Alaska, and the desert of the Sahara. To breathe in and capture the sights of these lands. To preserve the beauty but also the function.
We take for granted the things our land has to offer us. The trees and plants it grows. The food that we take from it, the houses we build. The homes for the animals of our Earth. The air we breathe into our lungs every day. We abuse our land daily. We liter, and throw garbage into our oceans. We pour toxic chemicals into our lakes and rivers. We cut down forests to build more buildings, hotels, coffee houses, and gas stations. We bleed our natural resources dry and suck the oil out of the ground. We collect water from running brooks and put it in plastic bottles. We are killing our Land. There will be no beauty to be seen or visited, no places for the animals who live amoung us, no trees for our homes, no food for our tables. I won't have a home to sit in at night and watch the sun throw off colors of red and orange as it falls behind the horizon and ponder the question above, for we will not be here without our Land.
