Defying the Flames

The daughters had questions that they still were forming words for. They were the very ones the mothers had forgotten and had traded for the answers the marriages offered. The daughters only got as far as \"why?\" before chastity belts and muzzles were slapped on them when their mothers stopped speaking and distanced themselves from their daughters' power. This power was dangerous; it was known to drive mothers and daughters apart, generation after generation. It was the burning times that made the mothers tremble at the sight of their daughters practicing spells among the coven of their friends. They feared the daughters might be tortured at the stake, or worse, laugh while they burned and fly into the sky, defying the flames.
