Women taking the challenge

I read an article in a local newspaper about a woman who is a commercial motorcycle rider. In Cameroon, commercial bike riders work like taxis and are very vital in some towns were bad roads don't allow taxis to get to places. All of this commercial bike riders are man, which is why this lady made the news.

She has a motorcycle she rides herself, transporting people from one end of town to another for pay. She says male clients are understanding and encouraging while female clients runaway from her. She does this to take of her needs so she doesn't need to be dependent on anybody. She says sometimes other women shun her company but she doesn't care.

When other women do not encourage her it makes men say that biggest obstacle to women's empowerment is women themselves. Sometimes that is true. A woman would not want to see another one prosper because of jealously and sometimes do not encourage others taking chances like this lady bike rider.

I admire this lady's courage because she has taken the challenge where even those of us who are considered educated and influential have been unable to. Her line of job is dangerous for her as it is for men because bike riders are usually targeted by thieves and armed robbers who use their bikes for operations but this lady has not been fazed in the face of such danger.

Women, we should believe in ourselves like this lady and do what we know we can do thereby asserting our rights to be what we can be in every society.
