Ann-Christine d’Adesky (co- founder of World Pulse) visits CREAW, Kenya

Ann-christine and Leah

Ann-Christine d’Adesky (co- founder of World Pulse and WE-ACTx) and Leah Auma Okeyo (Voices of our Future Correspondent) visited our Secretariat at the First Annual Evaluation Forum of the Kibera-SGBV project at CREAW-Kenya, last Friday 26th of June 2009.

We are elated by the visit. Talking to Leah Auma Okeyo, a Correspondent was ecstatic! This journey is now so real...

We conversed on the impact of the recent Sex boycott in Kenya. The G10 initiative was a success. Not only did it gain attention about problems within parliament and get policy makers to sit down and discuss the issues raised, but it helped to raise awareness about women’s rights and women’s commitment to solving the problems plaguing the country.

Our guests also met our team from Kibera SGBV project and community representatives from the largest slum in Africa. With full time lawyers, community educators and paralegals, our project is reaching the whole population of Kibera, to implement the Sexual offences Act- 2006, as well as pooling efforts to eliminate Sexual and Gender-Based Violence. The Kibera team were at the first review meeting following its launch that was officiated by Rt. Hon. Raila A. Odinga, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya, on the 30th of March, 2009.

Most importantly, Ann-Christine challenged us to encourage community support groups in Kibera, where members across gender and age will team up and form economic empowerment groups. Such systems would also pave avenues for creative documenting survivor’s stories and fighting against other social ills, fostering a wholesome approach to make the Kibera community a harmonious one.

Connections!

How absolutely wonderful that you got to connect with Anne-christine and Leah. They are both remarkable women. I had the joy of attending the 2008 AIDS Conference in Mexico City with them. Honestly, they were tireless. I couldn't keep up.

Thank you for sharing some details of your meeting!
