Need: Become a Multi-Media Mentor to Young Arab Women in NY

Hello, all -

This dropped in my inbox today from Urban Unrest, and I thought I'd pass it along:

Arab Women Active in the Arts and Media (AWAAM) is a media based community organization in Brooklyn, New York, that seeks to empower young women by providing comprehensive leadership opportunities in community organizing, art and media skills. Our goal is to empower a generation of young women with community organizing and media skills necessary to act as leaders within their communities. We are the only membership-driven media organization founded by Arab women in the United States.

VIDEO MENTORSHIP

Responsibilities include research, facilitating workshops, videography, editing and production.

Applicants must be committed to work with four young women on a weekend project. Workshops are staggered and run 4-6 hours, one day per week. The work can be divided between two mentors. Group should have a simple finished product every three weeks.

Requirements
- prompt & reliable female mentor
- organized, positive and energetic
- comfortable working in a collective space with youth
- committed to social change
- Final Cut Pro skills
- videography skills

WEB DESIGN MENTORSHIP

Responsibilities include research, facilitating workshops, designing, implementing, updating website.

Applicants must be committed to work with four young women on a weekend project including productions of surveys, quizzes, blogs, vlogs, etc and posting video and radio work to website. Workshops are staggered and run 4-6 hours, one day per week. The work can be divided between two mentors. Group should have a simple finished product every three weeks.

Requirements
- prompt & reliable female mentor
- organized, positive and energetic
- comfortable working in a collective space with youth
- committed to social change
- internet savvy
- web design, graphics, Adobe Photoshop, blogging

RADIO MENTORSHIP

Responsibilities include research, facilitating workshops, recording, mixing, editing and production.

Applicants must be committed to work with four young women on a weekend project. Workshops are staggered and run 4-6 hours, one day per week. The work can be divided between two mentors. Group should have a simple finished product every three weeks.

Requirements
- prompt & reliable female mentor
- organized, positive and energetic
- comfortable working in a collective space with youth
- committed to social change
- radio production skills

Hi Heena,

I don't know the people at AWAAM personally, but I'm sure you could reach them through their site, http://www.awaam.org/. I posted this about a year ago, so Hanan's email may have changed, but I'm sure they'd still be interested in hearing from you. The organization's basic email is info@awaam.org.
