I am the founder/editor of an online magazine in Nepal called V.E.N.T! Magazine (voices, expressions 'n tales), www.ventzine.com, which just launched this year. Our magazine is committed to citizenship journalism and serves as a platform for emerging writers and visual artists, gives citizens a voice in the media, and brings a fresh perspective of various issues often overlooked by the mainstream media. We promote alternative, grassroots journalism—reporting things we see in our own backyards and speaking out for those who cannot. We believe in the power of information and expression to inspire change. In Nepal, there are many media outlets now, but journalism is still fairly new here. I feel that the media here is banking on modernization, and journalism is more of a commercial thing (business) than reporting. I want Nepalese youth to grow to become responsible reporters with a conscious without being bogged down by big media conglomerates. We just finished two workshops by VENT!: creative writing and photojournalism. We want to teach responsible journalism, ethics, the art of writing, grassroots journalism, etc. We are starting a mentoring program for emerging writers, something like what World Pulse is doing for women around the globe..I believe that the media is a very powerful tool for change and it can shape the youth of today. We want to be part of this movement, even in a small way. We have a great team of dedicated volunteers who love what VENT! stands for. We are small, but growing!! We are currently looking for partners and sponsors that we can collaborate with to help our cause. Check us out at www.ventzine.com. Any advice welcome!!
