Fighting the shadow pandemic

A couple of weeks ago, I had to write an article on the alarming surge of gender based violence during the Covid-19 pandemic. That opened my eyes to what has now been referred to as the "shadow pandemic". A lot of girls and women are trapped at home with their abusers because of the lockdown and access to sexual and reproductive health services has drastically reduced.

After reading the articles I sought for references, I was devastated. I knew that i needed to do something to help even if it was just in a little way. I believe that community plays a large role in providing support for survivors of gender based violence and helping to raise awareness to the issue.

This is why I decided to start "You Are Not Alone". It is a virtual support community for survivors of gender based violence. The goal is to provide mental support for members of the community as well as to connect them with legal or medical services if needed. I strongly believe that if we come together, we can provide mutual support to one another.

Hello there,

Oh, great! You may want to collaborate with Kirthi who created a GBV, global tracker to ensure there is global services for women worldwide. She's a lovely, humanitarian trailblazer, and I'm sure she'd love to hear from you. This is more about her app and initiative: https://www.worldpulse.com/community/users/kirthijay/campaign-updates/95187

Let me know how it goes:-)

God on you Abebi, for responding to such an urgent and crucial need for women in your community and beyond. I hope that many will find you, and feel supported. And I pray that you will be strengthened so you can carry their burdens and their wounds and their stories as you connect.
Sending love and best wishes

Hearty congratulations, Abebi. This is super cool. Much needed at this time. Women need a safe place where they can find emotional or material support. Keep up the good work!

Hugs,

E. J.

Abebi, welcome and congrats on sharing your first story - and even bigger congrats on this initiative you are undertaking to support survivors of GBV. Support is absolutely vital for survivors and in these times, virtual support groups are so important. I look forward to hearing more about this project as it gets going! You've found the perfect community to find support and inspiration as you embark on this work and we're so glad you're here
