My Journey

I am from Nigeria. The only daughter amongst five brothers and we were trained by our mother because our father died when we were still children.
In Nigeria, I belong to the Igbo community with a strong patriarchal culture and tight family bonds .
One challenge in my community I will like to change is domestic violence. Its a cankerworm that has very strong roots. Women suffer in silence in their homes. They are intimidated and are slaves in their homes. They do the farm work, put food on the table,do all the house chores, take care of the children, little or no support financially from the men,and are expected to satisfy their husband sexually even if they are tired without complain.Sometimes they are raped and beaten by the husband. The culture expects her to endure because pain is part of marriage as they say.She can't report the matter because it will bring shame to her family.
I speak about this issues on my social media networks.
Actions I will love to take includes educating women on their rights, advocacy against domestic abuse, encouraging women to speak up ,collaborating with women, govt, agencies to fight against all forms of domestic abuse.
To do this successfully I need to learn more on advocacy skills, networking, fundraising and sustainability plans.
