International Day of the Girl Child, 11 October! Stand Up For Girls

Five years ago, the United Nations General Assembly adopted 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child, recognizing girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. The theme of this year's day is \"The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030.\"

Empowering girls will help the world achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, contained in Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. The theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, on 11 October, emphases on the “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: A Global Girl Data Movement” and is a call for action for increased investment in collecting and analyzing girl-focused and girl-relevant data. One year into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, improving data on girls and addressing the issues that are holding them back is critical for fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals.

As we celebrate another year of great achievements with many policies and laws upgraded in many African countries. We need to remember that more than 100 millions girls are still' missing' due to prenatal sex selection.Women and girls make up 80 % of the estimated 800,000 people trafficked across national borders every year, with 79% of them trafficked for sexual exploitation.Girls till face a lot of harassment and sexual violence at schools. Over 60 millions girls worldwide are child brides, married before the age of 18. Approximately 100 to 140 millions girls and women in the world have experienced female genital mutilation or cutting.

Much more needs to be done to harness a better future for the girl child.MOHCAM empowers women and girls and raises awareness on their rights and advocate for better conditions for girls in desperate situations in schools and rural communities. On the International Day of the Girl Child, we stand with the global community to support girls’ progress everywhere. \"Let girls be girls\".

Happy International Day of the Girl
