A small paradise, Maldives – getting destroyed

Chilling to the core of the soul to read “... we feel no pain when we kill” “... only be satisfied when have killed the person.” “...fantasize of going on a killing spree, I have in my mind all those whom I will kill” (Rapid Situation Assessment of Gangs in Male’, Maldives Institute for Psychological Services, Training and Research2012)

Expressed by members of gangs that exist in Male’ the capital island of Maldives. The West supported for a democracy in Maldives yet the people of Maldives has minimal understanding of what a democracy is. The population of Maldives is roughly 300,000 with 60% under the age of 25 years.

The party system not only created division in the country it also increased the fierceness of gang members. These gangs increase in their actions with the backing from the political parties. This accusation is strongly denied by the political parties.

There is great need to:
1- Re-defining education to address the current education system and develop strategies to improve the attitude of the society.
2- Create systems to assist the society to heal and regain self-respect and respect for others.

The above mentioned needs can only be addressed by people who collectively believe to improve the society without self interest. The key question to ask is ‘In whose interest am I talking this action?”

After reading the report written by the Maldives Institute for Psychological Services, Training and Research (August 2012) supported by The Asia Foundation I felt it is crucial to share this here on WorldPulse.

Please read report for more detail. One key concern is the exploitation of minors by older gang leaders. These gangs used by political tycoons. It is sad and horrifying truths of once a peaceful country.

The paradise is becoming a living hell to its people.
