> PRINCE BERNHARD NATURE FUND: CONSERVATION IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD



The Prince Bernhard Nature Fund aims to help save critically endangered flora and fauna in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and Latin America. Preferably, our funding goes to organizations from these regions, sometimes in partnership with parties in Europe or North America.Due to the limited nature of our funding (our grants do not exceed 25,000 Euro), the Fund prefers to act as a catalyzer of larger initiatives, and link its project support as much as possible to larger themes and organizations.

> UK NATURAL ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH COUNCIL (NERC): RESEARCH ON NATURAL HAZARDS AND RISKS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA AND SOUTH ASIA



NERC calls for research consortium proposals in the program SHEAR (Science for Humanitarian Emergencies and Resilience). SHEAR is a five-year international and interdisciplinary programme to support improved disaster resilience and humanitarian response in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia by advancing monitoring, assessment, and prediction of natural hazards and risks. Applicants are expected to submit proposals that address each of the three main components of SHEAR (main theme, crossing-cutting theme and pilot study) and to identify these clearly. This is a global open call that welcomes international applicants, particularly those based in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

> WATERLOO FOUNDATION: ENVIRONMENT FUND -- MARINE RESOURCES



The Waterloo Foundation manages an Environmental Fund that supports projects to manage and conserve tropical rainforests and marine resources (especially fisheries). Applications are invited from UK charities in partnerships with local organizations in the developing world, and from non-UK organizations that can provide suitable references in the UK. The majority of grants are for projects of up to three years. The majority of our grants support projects or programmes. Grants that are predominantly for core costs or unrestricted funding will only be open to organisations which we have previously supported with a grant, and which are invited to apply for this type of funding support.

> UK NATURAL ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH COUNCIL (NERC) AND SÃO PAULO RESEARCH FOUNDATION (FAPESP): RESEARCH ON BIOMES IN BRAZIL



NERC and the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) are inviting research proposals under this 'Understanding and Sustaining Brazilian Biome Resources' call. This call is supported by the UK through the Newton Fund which forms part of the UK governments Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment and is only open to joint UK-Brazil applications.The program will likely fund two or three projects for up to three years. Each of NERC and FAPESP has specific eligibility criteria.

> U.S. NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF): GEOGRAPHY AND SPATIAL SCIENCES PROGRAM 2015



The NSF funds an annual competition for research on the geographic distributions and interactions of human, physical, and biotic systems on the Earth's surface. Projects on a variety of topics (U.S. and international) qualify for support if they offer promise of enhancing geographical knowledge, concepts, theories, methods, and their application to societal problems and concerns. Past projects include several in the world's developing countries related to environmental disasters, waste management, marine spatial planning, wildlife conservation, and others.

> TOYOTA FOUNDATION: RESEARCH GRANTS 2015



The Research Grant Program 2015, titled \"Exploring New Values for Society\", provides two grant frameworks respectively for joint research projects and individual research projects that can be expected to lead to \"creation of new values for society\". For both frameworks, we solicit ambitious projects that are founded on creative concepts that reflect a youthful perspective and whose results can help change people's ways of thinking - regardless of their country or region of origin or their social position and circumstances - and can lead to actions that bring about solutions to the issues faced.

> ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF LONDON: PANGOLIN CONSERVATION IN CENTRAL AFRICA



The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Zoological Society of London announce the MENTOR-POP (Progress on Pangolins) Fellowship Programme for 2015-2016. Based in Cameroon, the 15-month fellowships will develop a trans-disciplinary team of early-career Central African and Asian conservation practitioners to champion the conservation of pangolins in Central Africa. In Africa, the call is open to nationals, citizens, or permanent residents of Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Sao Tomé and Principe. In Asia, the eligible countries are China, Laos, and Vietnam.

> CAMPUS FRANCE: BIO-ASIA 2015



Bio-Asia promotes French-Asian research and innovation related to biodiversity, natural substances, and bio-technologies. Priority topics for 2015 are biodiversity; biotechnologies and health; green chemistry and biotransformation; and biomass energy. Projects must include at least one research unit from France, and at least two research units from Asian partner countries (of which at least one is in an ASEAN member state). The partner countries are Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, China, East Timor, India, Indonesia, Laos, Japan, Malaysia, Mayanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

> EUROPEAN COMMISSION (EC): SMALLHOLDER RICE PRODUCTION IN GUINEA-BISSAU



The EC will make grants to improve rice production by smallholder farmers in Guinea-Bissau. Eligibility for funding extends to nonprofit non-state organizations in the EU and its candidate countries; the European Economic Area; the ACP countries (including Guinea-Bissau); and qualifying international organizations. > INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES (IGES): SATOYAMA DEVELOPMENT MECHANISM 2015



The IGES, the United Nations University Institute for Advanced Studies on Sustainability, and Japan's Ministry of the Environment call for proposals under the Satoyama Development Mechanism 2015. The International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) promotes the sustainable use of Socio-Ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes. Grants are up to US$10 thousand for field projects; research; collaboration activities; and capacity building and outreach in relation to linking ecosystems and community systems on a sustainable basis. Applicants must be approved members of the IPSI at the date of submitting project proposals.

> INTERGOVERNMENTAL PLATFORM ON BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES (IPBES): MATCHMAKING FACILITY



The IPBES calls for proposals and pledges from organizations, institutions, partnerships, and individuals needing or offering technical or financial support for capacity-building projects in support of the objectives of IPBES. The subject areas in the Matching Facility include national assessments of biodiversity and ecosystem services; knowledge, information, and data; indigenous and local knowledge; policy support tools; and other. Accepted proposals and pledges will become publicly accessible following the first IPBES Capacity-Building Forum to be held in India during October 2015.

> SAVE OUR SPECIES (SOS): LEMUR CONSERVATION IN MADAGASCAR



SOS announces a special call for proposals to protect threatened lemurs in Madagascar. Applicants should develop their proposals in accord with the IUCN strategy for lemur conservation in Madagascar. Eligibility for grants extends to civil society organizations for field-based conservation. Applicants will be expected to work closely with local communities and government authorities. Most grants will be under US$200 thousand. Requirements for matching funds are scaled in relation to project size.

> UK NATURAL ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH COUNCIL (NERC): WATER FOR FOOD, ENERGY, AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES IN INDIA



The UK's NERC and India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) jointly invite proposals for research on sustaining water resources for food, energy, and ecosystem services in India. Applicants are invited to submit proposals for interdisciplinary research project focused on the main hydrological processes and how they interact within one of the three case study regions: the Himalayas, the Indo-Gangetic Plain, or Peninsular India. Applications must include at least one India-based researcher and at least one UK-based researcher. Up to £1 million per case study will be provided by NERC, to be matched by India's MoES in terms of research effort.



The closing date for notification of intent to submit is 07 September 2015.



> RESEARCH COUNCIL OF NORWAY: RESEARCH ON THE CLIMATE SYSTEM



The program KLIMAFORSK is Norway's new 10-year initiative for climate research. The program targets research on the climate system in the areas of predictability, role of the Arctic and/or Antarctic, regional climate modelling, and biogeochemical cycles. Applicants are encouraged to take advantage of international cooperation in arenas such as Horizon 2020, the Future Earth programme, and other international initiatives.

> RESEARCH COUNCIL OF NORWAY: ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH FOR A GREEN TRANSITION



The Research Council of Norway announces its first call for proposals issued by the MILJØFORSK program (2016-2025) to generate new knowledge about biodiversity, cultural environments, ecosystem services, hazardous substances, and pollution. It will also study pressures on the environment and the relationships between social drivers/measures and natural drivers/responses. The MILJØFORSK program will cooperate with the Norway – Global Partner program (NORGLOBAL) to incorporate partners from the developing world into the grant proposals. The priority partner countries for 2015 are Afghanistan; Ethiopia; Haiti; Malawi; Mali; Mozambique; Myanmar; Nepal; Palestine; Somalia; South Sudan; and Tanzania - see the announcement for other developing countries which are also eligible.

> RESEARCH COUNCIL OF NORWAY: INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN AQUACULTURE 2016



The Research Council of Norway funds HAVBRUK2 for research in aquaculture, including with international partners. Special priority is given to collaboration with researchers in the EU, USA, Canada, China, Japan, India, Chile, and Brazil. Collaboration with researchers in other countries will also be of interest. Research topics include projects that enhance insight into climate adaptation, emissions reduction, and environment-friendly energy.



The closing date for applications is 09 September 2015.



> CRITICAL ECOSYSTEM PARTNERSHIP FUND (CEPF): BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN



The CEPF will make small grants (up to US$20 thousand) for biodiversity conservation in Algeria, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia. Projects should be aligned with Strategic Direction 1 of the conservation strategy for the Mediterranean Basin Biodiversity Hotspot. CEPF's announcement includes a list of eligible sites and corridors for proposed projects. The program is open to NGOs, community groups, universities, private enterprises, and individuals. Individuals are encouraged to work with civil society organizations and communities to develop joint applications, rather than apply directly.



The deadline for letters of inquiry is 10 September 2015.
