Nominations are now open for the AARP Purpose Prize, it is a national award in the United States that celebrates people 50 and older who are using their life experience to make a difference. Through the Purpose Prize award, AARP celebrates the creativity, innovation, and inspiration that life experience brings.

Through this important annual award, AARP seeks to create a world in which it is the norm for people age 50 and over to leverage their life’s wisdom and lived experience to find a new purpose, make a difference, and be valued for their innovative ideas.

Areas of particular interest:
a) Civic engagement and community development (helping people be active participants in building and strengthening their communities);
b) Environmental issues (combatting the challenges facing the planet);
c) Children and youth (helping kids and young people reach their full potential, in school settings and elsewhere);
d) Arts and culture (using art and culture as tools to engage communities in positive change);
e) Peace and security rights (establishing or preserving justice and equality by peaceful means);
f) Homelessness (addressing the needs of homeless populations);
g) Veterans (providing services for veterans, advocating for veterans’ rights, empowering veterans);
h) Animal protection (ensuring animal welfare, promoting animal companionship with vulnerable populations).

Utilize This Offer

Applicants must:
1. Be US citizens living in the fifty (50) United States or the District of Columbia, who are at least fifty (50) years old as of the date of entry and who started the work for which they are applying for at the age of forty (40) or older;
2. Have a connection between her/his own life and work;
3. Have founded a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) non-profit organization with its principal place of business located in the United States in good standing in its state of origin and tax exemption under the Internal Revenue Code at the time of Applicant’s submission and throughout the Purpose Prize Contest selection process (“Founded Non-profit”).

There are five (5) Purpose Prize Contest Winners each year with an award of USD$10,000 for their Founded Non-Profit organizations.

AARP will also invite a select group of Finalists to be “Fellows.”

Applications will be accepted until March 31, 2021 at 5:00 PM ET.

Friendly reminders:
1. Study similar calls (open and closed ones) that interest you, in order to discover what they have in common and how you can think ahead/plan to apply = increase your chances of success!
2. Prepare/update paperwork (certificates and attests usually required by calls such this one);
3. Write - baby steps... - and discuss a project draft, to validate within your group the priorities of the proposal(s) and to train your grant writing skills as well;
4. Do not wait to find a call and then start writing your proposal / project. Start now!!!
5. Do visit regularly the World Pulse website to make customized searches for grant opportunities. How?
a) Click on the Menu (left upper corner);
b) Type the name of your country in the search area (blank space); click enter;
c) Click on Filters;
d) Click on Resource;
e) Browse the results (opportunities) that will show up, by chronological order of posting;
6. Spread the word about your failures and achievements in grant requests. Yes, tell these stories too... They will enlighten and inspire your network;
