Sanobajai – Single woman violence case of my village Nepal

During my childhood time Sanobajai was  my villager and all villagers said that she was married whenever she was 5 year old in her childhood. After when she became 7 year old age she became widow for her all life. Her husband was died when she was 7 year old . And my villagers used to said due to her previous life bad work she became widow. Therefore, everybody insulted her. Everybody accused her as a witch. And during the time of someone became sick then everybody accused her and bit her due to her chanting to them. Therefore, she was very dominated by society.

For elimination of her bad work  of previous life she went to Kashi India, worshipped to god and removed her hear of head and returned back to again village of Nepal. She was worshipping to the god, everybody ridiculed her and joked her. Therefore, she became so so furious and she was crying that she wasn’t witch she was just simple woman.

Most of the villagers were against her and shared about her negative things only. And every villagers blamed she was shaking in her room herself so that she must be  witch. Therefore if somebody became sick, villagers went with local healer and healer also accused to her as witch. And asked goat, hen for giving sacrifice to that witch. As a result, she became alone and alone. As a childhood , I went to her house and she offered me nice bread and food. Therefore, I always like to go her house but all my villagers scolded me why I went to that house, I would be sick due to her witch skill. But I never became sick after offering her food but villagers suspected me and scoled me and said ‘Don’t go there, don’t go there ‘

I surprised never people became witch. I showed whoever was rich with husband alive nobody said them witch. But whoever hadn’t husband, she was called as witch. And in the Nepalse socity if husband died in any age woman wasn’t allowed to second marriage. Therefore, Sanobjai didn’t marry again. But when she talked to anybody people charged her as bad woman why she talked that man. In this way, among the villagers always people talked about Sanobajai.  

Oneday, about 1 AM mid night people shouting and crying then we saw outside. A lot of firing was seen in her house and even that firing caught my house too. Then our house and her house including  four houses were burnt. Then, everybody scolded her very much. Worriedly, She missed where she went we didn’t know. After one month her dead body was found near forest. That was mysterious either she did suicide or she was killed.

 Therefore, in village level of Neplalese society had a lot of superstition about witch and villagers misbehaves and dominated women like single woman Sanobajai. For that still awareness raising program need to given to society man and women. As well as Psychosocial program need to provide women and men for changing behavior of society.
