Subject: Video Girls for Change Initiative - Sharing learning

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to share with you the learning that came out of the Video Girls for Change Initiative, which supported adolescent girls, who are part of empowerment projects, to take a leading role in evaluating girl programming – was funded by the Nike Foundation and ran in parallel in two countries with two different program implementers: Population Council Guatemala and BRAC Uganda.

As you have expressed interest in this initiative early 2011, here we are sharing the learning and resources that came out of the Initiative with you all.

On the 14th of February 2013 InsightShare hosted a webinar which brought together the video girls, programme implementers from Uganda and Guatemala, as well as trainer and donor representatives. They shared the outcomes and key learning from this initiative with other organisations and individuals working with adolescent girl programming around the world or with those who have an interest in understanding more about the challenges and opportunities of using participatory video for participatory monitoring and evaluation.

About the initiative

During 7 months in 2011-2012, 12 adolescent girl trainees in each country learnt how to use participatory video combined with the Most Significant Change Technique to support 450 other girls to share their stories of change. At the end of the process, the girl trainees -who became strong video girl leaders- analysed the 64 collected video stories of change (32 per country), collected notes from the process, and presented the results and recommendations to the program implementers and donor in video reports. They also shared their recommendations and interacted with activists and development workers at the AWID conference in Turkey in April 2012.
