The first step.................

The first thing I wanted to know is, what is Climate Change?

a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.

Climate change seems to take the world over completely! And Curacao is not exempt from this change. We have two seasons dry and rainy but it’s becoming more dry than rainy. Because of the North East Breeze that we enjoy makes the weather bearable. Rainy season starts 1st of October and it seems that there is no rain in sight. But we will keep on hoping.

Many years ago, during slavery and after, the slaves and the community had their way of constructing their home in a way that it stays cool. Cow dung, coral stone and Aloe Vera were used to build the walls. Water reservoir (Regenbak) were build close to their homes so water was always available. All the homes that came after that season in time was built differently. Water waste, too much water is wasted it must be kept.

They were better equip to deal with climate change. In this modern time and age we built our homes differently. I think it is the wrong way to deal with nature. In my opinion it is very difficult for women to deal with this climate change in her community. But women will look for ways to take care of their family no matter what. We are multi task and no matter the circumstances we will make it one or the other. Maybe leaving the heavy hard work for the night and light work for during the day.

Air pollution is always a big concern for many. We have on Curacao since 1914 a refinery. That means that after 1914 pollution became a problem but men was not able to see it as a problem for their health but for what it was, an opportunity! After a 100 years we have a strong support group in place. The support group is fighting for this situation to stop. The change in the weather makes it worst for the people that lives in the area where the refinery is located because all the pollution hang in the area. To be clear air pollution is well spoken about almost every day in the media.

Climate change need to be spoken about here in Curacao and around the world! With the help of others I will look for ways to get in touch with government where I can visit the parliament and share my concern. I don’t know if I’m going to make it but I will try. There is always a way to make our world better by taking the first step…………………

Dear Annadassa,

I agree with you: Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase. -  Martin Luther King

The rising air pollution and the rgrowing heat on the planet is leading to a rapid and unpredictable  change in the climate causing health problems and disasters acroos the globe. You are right that women are affected by this a lot. The constant migraines, weakness, and changes in menstrual cycles affect them a lot and they have to handle all these while still working and managing home.

It is indeed, time to act!

Surya

Hi Annadassa,

For me climate change is the result of what people doing to the nature. The way you compare how people living from the past to the present is very comprehensive. You are correct,we deal our nature wrongly.

Before, people live in a simple life.No electricity,no digital technology, less vehicles for transportation. In farming they didn't used any chemicals or fertilizer but still they harvest more than enough for their needs. Most of the people needs can take from the natural resources. They breath the air and eat the foods fresh.

Time goes by,the way people lived right now is very different. We live in  high technology,a robotic world.Transportation become high tech too.Vehicles become more and more and it increase the pollution in the air.Plus, the smoke from the factories. It will a destroy our ozone layer. The preserved forests and mountains become  a resort.Government purpose to promote the tourism. They cutting the trees, digging soil that can cause the soil erosion and landslide. The river become dry and water become pollutant. The people down lost their water resources.

Who we will blame? The silent nature or the people who have no contentment in life?Yes dear it's time to act.We start at home.By doing/practice waste segregation, plant more trees. It's not too late we can save our nature.

I hope that you can bring up this issue on your government. And they can put some actions on this.I know you can do it sister. You are a powerful woman.Stay bless sister.

Champagne

Hi Annadassa, Thank you for sharing your thoughts on climate change. I really enjoyed reading your post because I learned a lot about Curacao. I especially liked when you wrote about the houses on the island and how they were in the past. Climate change is truly affecting our whole planet and presents different challenges for different countries with different geographies. It's great you want to contact your government and work together with others on this issue. Thanks again for sharing. Best wishes, Julia

Annadassa,

I can definately tell you are passionate about how climate change is affecting your country. And I can see why! One of the great things about WorldPulse is that I am learning so much about different issues that I did not necessarily think of before.  Your experiences and perspectives on how climate change has changed and challenged you has made me really think more about the impact we have on this planet. While I do my part in recycling, being mindful of energy use and the like, I now want to examine what else I can do to improve the Earth. Hopefully, with your voice and passion, others in your country will begin to do the same.

I hope that you get your rain soon!

Cheers,

Samantha
