What my Children with Down Syndrome think about Corona Virus.

As an advocate for persons living with Down Syndrome, I am learning a lot of adaptive strategies day in and out as the days of Corona Virus keeps adding. Trying to explain in detail to persons living with Down Syndrome what Corona Virus is all about, seems a difficult activity. Why difficult?... Imagine the first time you heard of the term Corona virus. It probably didn't make a lot of sense to you. Now what becomes of someone whose mental age is far lower than his actual age in understanding what you had issues understanding.

The good thing here is; even though persons with Down syndrome are slow at learning, it stays in them whenever they learn. The  strategy I used is to always remind  the various families especially the Mothers to talk to their children about the virus and how to prevent it as they now spend most of the time at home with parents. On phone, I fine it difficult to control myself not to laugh as I hear all sorts of ways they pronounce the term Corona virus. (We have fun always even on phone). Happy they have an idea and can explain to you in their own way the reasons they are wearing face mask, washing hands, using hand sanitizers and staying at home. I encourage and teach persons with Down Syndrome how to take care of them selves especially the hygienic aspect  as corona virus is concerned. The most amazing thing is they are learning and it gives me joy anytime they do it on their own.

I was so happy when I asked Miss Carine (on the picture) the reason for the training on washing of hands and wearing a mask, she simply replied

"Coro vus" in her words.

Remember. If A is safe and B is not safe, automatically, A is not safe. The fight against Corona virus is a collaborative fight reasons we need to go inclusive in all campaigns against the virus.

Let's stay safe
