Women and Technology

In helping women learn to use digital technology, it would really help us to have a learning centre for women so that they may feel these tools with their own hands. They will learn about the use of a computer through doing. Computers will be an integral part of our future.

I would recommend that girls start to attend beginning at age 10, because we do not have the necessary resources to grant access to younger girls. I believe that starting with the above-mentioned age will suit our community. Our women are all behind due to the following reasons: discrimination against women in some of our communities, the fear of being seen as less competent, a lack of means (employment), etc. But with this World Pulse initiative, I’m sure that women will rise above this ignorance, and from now to December 2014, we will overcome the problems that eat away at our women. And I can assure you that these women are already committing themselves, so as to be competitive before this date, even though we only have one learning centre in Bukavu. Thank you and until next time.

Anuarite,

Thank you for presenting the issue of lack of training for women in your country, and also for suggesting and describing a solution.

If you can continue to move forward with this issue, you can become a significant part of the solution. Your description of the situation shows that you have excellent information and a reason to be a leader in helping the women of your country become computer-literate.

I hope this makes sense after translation from English to French. The auto-translation from your French to English is not completely clear, unfortunately. I hope I have understood your story correctly.

Keep speaking out!

All the best, Sarah

Your information on the difficulty of access to technology and its effects certainly brings to light the need to make technology available to everyone. There are definitely challenges in making this possible. With your efforts to contribute to the community and with initiatives taken by groups like World Pulse to bring technology awareness and access closer to even the remote communities, all these challenges can be overcome. It takes determination and collaboration to get this done and we certainly all have to do our share in making this possible. I wish you success in all your undertakings.

Dear Anuarite, Thank you for raising your voice regarding how the lack of access to technology, and the training it may require for effective utilisation, diminishes opportunities for women to lead productive lives and overcome incipient aspects of discrimination. Your suggestions that training centers can help women obtain computer skills and that training girls starting by age 10 when they are more likely to be able to access such centers is one that human rights and human development organisations appreciate and are striving to implement. With your knowledge of the situation and commitment to bettering the lives of women and girls, you can be an important part of the solution. I hope that World Pulse and other organisations can help you connect with others to build and operate the training centres you call for. I commend you for your commitment to this important issue.

All the bet, Susa

Anaurite,

It is amazing to feel solidarity with women like you who are concerned with breaching the digital divide for all females across the globe. It seems like you have some good ideas about ways that women in your area could benefit from access to computers, and also how this technology is vital for daily success in today's fast-paced world. The obstacles for women's access to computers you mentioned are some pretty big issues affecting women all over the world. It seems that you believe talking about it on sites like World Pulse will help women gain access. Are there any other practical ways in which we can fight the discrimination, general incompetency, and/or lack of employment you mentioned? Perhaps an all-female community forum on the topic could raise awareness and spark ideas. Again, thank so much for your input and keep up that positive vision!

Best, Kendall

Bon courage!

You've touched on some very important issues and I agree with the comments above that suggest you can be a strong part of the solution. Is there a way for you to teach what you know to the women around you? I liked Kendall's idea of a community forum to raise awareness too. Keep sharing your concerns and ideas for solutions, with your immediate community and this world pulse community! Take care, Heidi

Prenez garde, Heidi

Dear Anuarite,

By writing your message and sharing it with global citizens, you are already on the path to finding solutions. Thank you for clearly identifying the challenges women face when it comes to utilizing technology as tool of empowerment. While they may not be immediate or easy, I am confident that with wise individuals like you, positive changes will be made. By communicating with all of us at World Pulse you have opened the doors and I know that you will persevere and make a long lasting impact on the lives of the women in your community. Continue to seek solutions and even if it's a small number at first, try to implement the ideas that you have articulated for young women. It will happen.

With much gratitude,

Mimi

Bonjour.

Ten years old seems like a good age to begin learning computer skills. Young enough to have a flexible mind and learn quickly but old enough to apply it to their studies and future employment. I sincerely hope Bukavu gets more resources to broaden the reach of teaching this important skill. I commend you for taking part in the World Pulse program, which will surely expand your communiites network. Sincerely, Elizabeth

Bonjour Anuarite,

Pilar
